For this play I worked with the director and sound designer to help create the aural landscape of the play. I wrote a number of incidental rag time pieces to be played over the system and piano coached the actress who played Mayme, Mantra Walker, who played live music within the world of the play.

Rag Cues These are small splash cues that were prepared for the sound designer of the play.
Mamye's Rag This piece was created to be played live a number of times through out the play. It had to maintain the feeling of a rag while having a deep sense of longing and pensiveness within it. This is inherently a challenge because the definition of a rag is a march bass-line with syncopated melody line. This poses a challenge because a march is inherently charged with forward movement. To try and combat that it has a slow intro and then goes into a march tempo. Then it transitions into a rag melody in D minor.
Hopeful Wistful Rag This piece is an attempt to underscore Esther's nature. She has working hard for years in hopes of a better life. It is minimalistic because she in the play is happy with very minimalistic things.
